Some of you may have noticed a few billboards pop up in New York, London and Tokyo over the past few days. As we head into Pokémon GO’s one year anniversary this summer, we wanted to celebrate a few of our top Trainer cities by acknowledging their accomplishments in the form of near real-time stats being published about local Pokémon GO gameplay activity. With over 16M Pokémon caught in New York, 17.5M in London and 32.2M in Tokyo just yesterday, we felt that the best way to celebrate these local communities would be to publish these stats and call out these awesome cities. Many of these billboards have been activated as PokéStops in the game, allowing Trainers to engage with them to collect valuable items. Of course, there are many more cities and Trainers to celebrate out there and we plan to honor them in the days and weeks ahead.
This campaign was conceptualized by our new creative agency, Wieden+Kennedy. Iain Tait, Executive Creative Director, Wieden+Kennedy London, said: “We're thrilled to be working with Niantic. We're massive fans of their aim to inspire people to explore their environment through creative Real World games. Working on a constantly evolving gaming platform and experience like Pokémon GO is a dream come true.”
Here’s a sampling of the Pokémon GO City Celebrations advertising creative to give you a sense of what Trainers in London, New York and Tokyo will be seeing this month:
